What Your Tile Is Actually Made Of, and Why It Matters
Most people pick tile by looking at a sample board and asking "do I like this?" That's not wrong, but it skips a question worth two extra minutes: what is this actually made of, and what does that mean once it's on your wall or floor for the next 20 years? Material determines durability, maintenance, and — less obviously — how much waste and carbon went into getting that tile to your bathroom in the first place. Here's the plain-language version, from someone who installs this stuff for a living in the Twin Cities.
Porcelain
Kiln-fired at high temperature, dense, water absorption under 0.5%. This is the workhorse: floors, walls, showers, almost any application. It doesn't need sealing, it resists staining and moisture damage, and a well-installed porcelain floor easily lasts 30+ years without looking tired. Because it lasts that long without replacement, repair, or resealing, the material and labor that went into it get spread across decades of use — which matters more than people think when you're comparing it to flooring that gets torn out and redone every 5-10 years.
Ceramic
Similar manufacturing process to porcelain but less dense and more porous — cheaper up front, but more prone to chipping and cracking under heavy wear, and not recommended for floors in wet areas without care. Good choice for lower-traffic walls and backsplashes where cost matters more than 30-year durability.
Natural stone (marble, granite, slate)
Quarried, not manufactured — genuinely beautiful, genuinely high-maintenance. Marble etches with acidic products (yes, your skincare routine counts), most stone needs periodic sealing, and it costs more in both material and installation labor. Worth it when a client wants the real thing and is willing to maintain it; porcelain "stone-look" tile exists specifically because most people aren't.
Salvaged and reclaimed tile
The option almost nobody brings up: reclaimed architectural tile from demolition and renovation, sourced through Twin Cities salvage organizations instead of manufactured new. It's not the right fit for every job — supply is inconsistent and one-of-a-kind pieces don't stretch to cover a whole floor — but for accent work, niches, or a client who specifically wants something with history, it skips new manufacturing entirely. Hennepin County will actually pay you to do this: the county offers a grant of up to $5,000 to offset the cost of installing used building materials in a home, as part of its Zero Waste Plan. Most homeowners have no idea this exists.
The bigger picture: durability is the sustainability story
There's a lot of marketing noise about "eco-friendly" materials — recycled content, low-VOC everything — and some of it is meaningful. But the least-talked-about lever is the simplest one: a material that lasts decades beats a material that gets replaced every few years, even before you factor in what it's made of. Every re-tear-out means new material, new manufacturing, and a dumpster full of what used to be someone's bathroom floor. The World Economic Forum estimates circular practices in construction — reuse, adaptive reuse, designing for longevity — could cut sector emissions by up to 75% by 2050. That's an industry-scale number, but it starts at the scale of one homeowner choosing porcelain that'll outlast three trend cycles instead of vinyl that won't survive one.
None of this means every job needs to be a salvage project or a lecture about carbon footprints — most of the time it just means picking a durable material and installing it right the first time, so nobody's back in this bathroom in five years wondering why the floor already looks bad.
